USDOT Exempt Quantities & Concentrations

Federal regulatory agencies consider certain quantities of radioactive materials to be exempt from regulatory authority.  Specifically, the U. S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) has set levels of radioactivity below which a shipment is not subject to their rules (i.e., exempt consignment).

The following is  the listing of exempt concentrations, in units of “curies per gram” and exempt “curies”, promulgated by the U. S. Department of Transportation in Title 49, Code of Federal Regulations, Section 173.436.  Those marked with a “*” include the parent and progeny in equilibrium.  These values are subject to change.  Please contact Plexus-NSD for guidance on exempt consignments.
